Nuclear-armed states use nuclear weapons to threaten us every day. But today, for the first time in generations, governments are explicitly threatening to use nuclear weapons. The war in Ukraine shows how nuclear weapons are used to blackmail other countries and that nuclear deterrence is an unproven theory that could get everyone killed. The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was negotiated based on the understanding that every nation has a right to live free from threats of nuclear blackmail. At this historic inaugural meeting of States Parties to the TPNW, States and other relevant actors will gather to commit to a concrete action plan to implement obligations under the treaty and design the blueprint for nuclear disarmament. The TPNW’s unique focus on victim assistance and environmental remediation – on the people and places still suffering from the effects of nuclear weapon blasts, makes the first Meeting of States Parties the center of international action for ridding the world of nuclear weapons and their devastating effects.
Speakers overview & programme
The full programme will be made public by the UN Office of Disarmament Affairs in the lead up to the event. We will share it here once it’s available. Foreign ministers and other prominent figures will speak during the high-level segment. Disarmament diplomats and negotiators, alongside leaders of key civil society and international institutions, will work together over the three days to negotiate concrete ways to implement and universalise the TPNW, including provisions to assisted communities impacted by nuclear weapons use and testing and deny nuclear weapons any legitimacy in the world.

Civil Society Registration (summary below, full instructions here)
To participate in the first Meeting of States Parties (1MSP), civil society must:
1) Apply for accreditation (deadline 20 May); and
2) Register online via the UN’s Indico system (deadline 14 June).
1) Apply for Accreditation by 20 May 2022
All requests for accreditation must be submitted to the UN Secretariat by 20 May 2022 using the online form available here.
NGOs must also send a separate, written accreditation request to Diane Barnes ([email protected]) on the official letterhead of their organisation, listing the full names and titles of the representatives who will attend. (Additional representatives may be included in a revised accreditation letter, which should be submitted by 14 June 2022.) The letter must include the personal email address and direct telephone number of a point of contact in the organization. Non-ECOSOC organizations should also include a summary of their organization’s purpose, programs and activities in areas relevant to the scope of the conference.
Those NGOs that have requested accreditation will be informed by the UN Secretariat by email by 30 May 2022 of the outcome of their request. Organisations with ECOSOC consultative status will be accredited. All other approved NGOs will be provisionally accredited, pending the decision of the conference on the list of such organizations. 2) Register online (after accreditation has been approved) by 14 June 2022
Online registration will be available from 30 May until 14 June 2022 to representatives of NGOs whose accreditation has been approved.
Attendees must complete a registration form on the online Indico system here and follow the process described. Once a participant is registered in the system, the profile will remain and will only have to be updated if needed. Online registrations must include: (a) the accreditation request letter, including the name of the participant; and (b) the passport nationality and email address of the participant. If the requested documents are not attached, the system will reject the application.
Once their registrations have been approved in Indico, representatives of NGOs will receive a confirmation email. They will receive a second email requesting them to submit a photograph in order to fast track the printing of their access badge (to be collected in Vienna).
